EXPERT TELLS A STORY ABOUT FIGHTING HUNGER & OBESITY THROUGH SUSTAINABLE URBAN FOOD SOURCES! MEET MIKE DEVLIN: Father of Camden’s Community Gardening Program!
Teach your audiences how to GROW THEIR FOOD through a presentation by Mike Devlin, the tenacious leader of the Camden City Garden Club (CCGC)/Camden Children’s Garden (CCG). Due to the creation of 80+ new food-producing gardens through the City in just THREE years, the University of Pennsylvania Study found “Camden is (perhaps) the nation‘s fastest growing community gardens, both, despite of and because of Camden’s plight!” ~ Domenic Vitiello, UPENN’s Center for Public Health Initiatives (CPHI).
In addition, this growing Camden gardening organization was invited to partake in an inspiring transformation story about the growing of the PASSYUNK COMMUNITY GARDEN by RACHAEL RAY. This oasis was created with help from Ty Pennington, Dean Hill, Rachael Ray Show, the CAMDEN CHILDREN’S GARDEN and the Passyunk Community, to beautify and nourish a famous South Philadelphia Tourist Attraction! In 2 weeks, the RACHAEL RAY, CAMDEN CHILDREN’S GARDEN, and others gave the City of Brotherly Love a Block Party with the community garden and murals of fresh food, which served as a backdrop for the taping of the RACHAEL RAY show Philly Grill-Off where special guests included Patti LaBelle, Boyz II Men, and Ty Pennington. CAMDEN CHILDREN’S GARDEN will oversee the Passyunk Community in future construction and maintenance of the Community Garden. SEE RACHAEL RAY COMMUNITY GARDEN VIDEOs, PHOTOs, and PRESS RELEASE.
The most incredible part is: the army of community gardeners in Camden is feeding at least 10% of the population of Camden, “a food desert”, with nutritious fresh produce, meanwhile struggling with a 100% funding cut by the State of NJ Governor’s Office.
In addition, the CCGC’s Programs teach Camden school children about nutrition through hands-on classroom gardening program; give at-risk teens employment working to help their community, and the Club operates the 4.5 acre horticultural playground/education facility on Camden Waterfront to serve as an oasis in the poorest most dangerous city in America.
See FACT SHEET: CGC’s 120th Community Garden and Growing… for more information highlighting the CCGC’s latest accomplishments – now we are up to 120+ community gardens city-wide and the season is not over yet!
